BEIJING Chinese poet Bing Xin, one of the most celebrated Chinese writers of the 20s and 30s, died Sunday night in Beijing at the age of 99, official media reports said Monday. Deeply involved in the Woman's Liberation Movement, Bing also known by her birth name, Xie Wangying played a key role in the development of 20th century Chinese literature and was active amongst China's pre-liberation intellectuals, notably for her participation in the patriotic May 4th movement in 1919.
An American-trained poet, novelist, and essayist, Bing's first novel, two families, was published in 1920, and was followed by volumes of free verse poems and social critiques, an article on the front page of the communist-controlled People's Daily said. She revitalized her career, suspended during the 1966-76 cultural revolution, in the 1980s. (AFP)
